Here at dapper, we definitely pride ourselves on showcasing young people pursuing their passions, and doing what they love.  My friend Nick has been writing poetry for years, but has really just started to pursue it heavily.  A couple of days ago he wrote this for me.

“This poem was written for my friend @emschilling for those who don’t know she has diabetes.  I thought about how I was going to write this, and I thought of no other way to write it than to tell her story. If I offend anyone in this, I took my poetic license and I hold it near to me so I say in advance no disrespect. Enjoy…”

Die-Ugh Betes…

As she looked into the pieces of broken mirror

That lay on the floor as the realization grew nearer

She was too young to feel such pain

She could just die… ugh

Be these the things they talk about that happen to good people

The pain hurt like stabbing yourself with a needle

She was broken deep down inside

Turning to friends not many to confide

I mean she could run as far as charlotte

And not seek minimal help as if she knew anyone there

So she changed her persona covering it with short hair

But deep inside this phoenix was still scared

She burnt up inside she needed to control her blood stream

Tearing away the pain that made her yearn to scream

Painting pictures of broken vision

Glasses not to help her see so she could make a decision

But soon enough it became claritin clear,

He picked her up her insulin was here

Brought her to a new high where she fell in love

Her excessive thirst for someone to hold

Weighed less on her and grew tiresome and old

She was changing feeling things she could yet understand

She loved the way he made her feel he was her man

Even though she ate more of him she loss the weight of tears

She began to fall in love and cared less for fears

Yes she definitely changed

Due to man at her side…

Insulin’s his name.

Nick and I were extremely close when I got diagnosed and it’s so different to hear how he perceives my diagnosis and how I handle my chronic illness.  This poem is a little overwhelming to read for me, and really emotional.
