I recently finished reading Linchpin written by marketing guru Seth Godin and felt compelled to let others know about it. The author has an entire chapter written titled “The Powerful Culture of Gifts” and that’s exactly what this book is to its readers, a gift. After receiving Linchpin for my Business Marketing graduation present I began reading expecting to find your typical marketing strategies, motivation, and unrealistic guide to accomplishing your dreams, which was not at all the case. In the first few chapters one of his quotes states “There are no longer any great jobs where someone tells you precisely what to do”. I finally felt myself interested and able to agree with what I was reading. In a time where I am constantly left feeling appalled with baby boomers that cannot smoothly browse the internet or create a simple chart in Microsoft Excel yet hold our interviews, Seth Godin was able to make sense of it all. The strategies in this book were nothing like the memorization or A, B, C, D tests from College that leave you rattled and careless. Instead the author ties together Business and Art for a positive outlook on how people of all different job types can be artists in their own right. He doesn’t ask you to set unrealistic goals such as quitting your job or starting a company but he does stress being an individual. He teaches you how you can bring an artistic approach and voice your opinion no matter what your profession. What Seth is really doing in his book is discussing the future of business. If anyone is out there looking to accomplish business goals, looking to become an artist, or even unhappy with their current job I would highly recommend this book. I personally would like to thank the genius that is Seth Godin.
